Self-isolation : Seeking an Opportunity

Self-isolation : Seeking an Opportunity

“There is definitely a vibe,” I told my husband about a week ago when I went to the grocery store to pick up our weekly supply, and some extras, as things were starting to shape into an irregular form. Fear is funny like that, you can sense it right away, and it takes nothing for you to start feeling it, and even worse, to start spreading it.

A month ago if I were to ask you what your thoughts are about cooking, your answer probably would have fallen in the category of “I am too busy for that,” “ it’s a waste of time” or “I would love to, but I am not sure where to start.” All valid answers of course, no judgment here. This question was never a real problem, after all, we could always find a take out, delivery service or some ready-to-go food from the grocery store.

And then this happens, like out of a science-fiction movie, we are all facing a global Pandemic. For real. Just crazy. Words like self-isolation and social distancing start taking over our speech. They start representing a reality I simply never thought could be. And yet here we are, all of us, trying to make the best of it.

As a nutritionist I know healthy eating is a cornerstone of our health, I think we all can agree on this, but what about cooking? I believe cooking is far more important to our general well-being than we give it credit for. Yes we all cook because we have to eat to survive. We even pay other people to do this “task” so we can focus on what really matters, but what about situations like those we are currently living in?

We are probably spending more time in the kitchen than usual, not only that but we are also being forced to be more organized and creative in it than ever before. With our number one excuse “lack of time” taken out of the equation to avoid the kitchen, we are left to our own devices, probably dusting off cook books, and frantically looking for recipes, well, from everywhere.

Healthy cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact it isn’t. We just have to take a risk and start doing it. I am aware that not all of us enjoy cooking, but if the “busy” time is replaced with “self-isolation” time, could we reconnect with our kitchen? I believe we can.

The social and economic consequences that Covid -19 will bring are impossible to predict at this time, but right now one thing is certain, we have never had this type of OPPORTUNITY where time seems to be abundant, where we can reflect on so many aspects of our lives such as our habits, relationships, mind sets, and you guessed it, our cooking practices.

We cannot deny the incredible power of a delicious healthy dish to bring joy to the soul and tummy. #letuscook
